Large-scale wildfires in California seem to be occurring more frequently, and it feels like we have ‘Fire Season’ year-round. Ever wonder why it appears this way or how we got here? Decades of fire suppression, landscape ‘preservation’ ideologies, a warming climate, drought, invasive species and plant disease (like sudden oak death) have all contributed to the decline of forest health. The Marin Regional Forest Health Strategy is a robust plan outlining what “health” means for different forest types, including a chapter on Traditional Tribal Knowledge and recommendations for Tribal partnership in Marin County, the ancestral homeland of the Coast Miwok.
