On the 20th anniversary of its publication, the creative team behind Lakas and the Manilatown Fish share their recollections on the creation of this landmark children's book, the first to feature an all-Filipino creative team.
Author Tony Robles, illustrator Carl Angel, designer Lucille Tenazas and editor Ina Cumpiano will discuss the origins of the Lakas’ story as well as the process of visually bringing that story to life while honoring a community that at the time had been sorely under-represented in children’s books. We’ll also hear from numerous voices in the community for whom the book has had a tremendous impact, ending with a 20th-anniversary reading of the book from author Tony Robles.
