Hometown Homeless
Amid shifting encampments in Santa Cruz’s Potrero district, a circle of women gather to speak of life, love, and loss. This documentary explores the stories, struggles, and relationships of unhoused individuals. This collaborative project based in Santa Cruz California was co-directed by Maleah Welsh and Momma Shannan. The culmination of six years of work in the city-sanctioned Benchlands encampment, the project began as an interview and portrait study geared towards highlighting community driven solutions. As the work progressed, it turned into a short poetic documentary that explores the meaning of home.
