We celebrate the opening of States of Nature, an exhibition by papercut artist Daniela Yew.
Inspired by the shapes of U.S. states—artificial borders that only loosely reflect the land beneath them—and by the elegance of a 1943 atlas, Yew creates intricate wildlife overviews contained within each state’s silhouette. The works highlight state animals, commonly sighted species, and rare endemics, accompanied by smaller portraits of birds and plants.
Papercutting, practiced in many cultures, is both graphic and sculptural; each piece slowly emerges as tiny sections of paper are removed with a craft blade until the final form can be lifted free.
We invite you to meet the artist, view these detailed works up close, and celebrate the exhibition’s opening.
