August 15, 2025, marks the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese forced occupation. In recognition of this historic milestone, the Education for Social Justice Foundation (ESJF) commemorates the legacy of early Korean settlers in San Francisco who actively led or supported the Korean independence movement while contributing to the city's cultural and civic life.

At the heart of this history is the San Francisco Korean United Methodist Church, located at 1123 Powell Street—just steps from the Him Mark Lai Branch Library in Chinatown—which served as a central hub for Korean independence activism.

Discover the rich and often overlooked history of the church and its role in the Korean independence movement. The event features descendants of early Korean freedom fighters, local residents whose lives have been shaped by their legacy and educators from the San Francisco Unified School District. A special performance by a student choir provides a meaningful intergenerational tribute to the enduring spirit of justice and freedom.

The Education for Social Justice Foundation (ESJF) provides education on past injustices relegated to the sidelines of history. Incorporating lessons learned from the past, ESJF develops dignity-affirming and critical-thinking-based curricula to promote universal values.
