When you see a tattooed body, often you see animals inked on skin. With their strong and distinct symbolism, Chinese zodiac animals are popular tattoo motifs worn as talisman by people all over the world. Inked Zodiac: The Art of Jimmy Shy, showcases the twelve zodiac animals as tattoo illustrations drawn by the renowned artist. Featuring 12 hanging panels with reproductions of hand-drawn designs, Inked Zodiac celebrates the Year of the Horse and connects to the exhibition Living Tattoo Traditions: American Irezumi and Beyond, on view in the Jewett Gallery Oct. 2, 2025–March 1, 2026.
Born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan, Jimmy has been tattooing for over 15 years. In recent years, he has been at the forefront of a new generation of tattooers focusing on Asian sailor tattoos, Hong Kong traditional styles, and the legacy of Pinky Yun—with a particular interest in the cultural crosscurrents between East and West. His work has been featured in international media and art publications. Jimmy regularly tours the US with guest appearances in the culture's premier shops and conventions.
