Colonia Rusa en California: Fuerte Ross 1812-1841

California's Russian Colony; Fort Ross 1812-1841
Event detail

In the early 1800s Russians colonized a quiet stretch of Sonoma coast just 70 miles north of San Francisco.  They came primarily to hunt otters yet stayed on to farm and ranch, in the process creating a unique Russian, Alaskan Aleut, and Kashaya Pomo community.  This photographic essay describes the Fort Ross Settlement from its pre-European era through the present day.
