Celebrated Dutch designer Irma Boom specializes in making books.  And every book she makes is special.  Through her innovative manipulation of content, her use of unconventional materials, and her mastery of production techniques she pushes the boundaries of book design, making each a sculptural object that can  be manufactured at scale.  On this rare visit to San Francisco, Boom will use an overhead camera to present several of her books from the Letterform Archive's collection, exploring the process of creating each one, and demonstrating the tactile and sensory possibilities of the form.

Born in Lochem, The Netherlands, Irma Boom has been described as "The Queen of Books," with over 300 titles to her credit.  She attended AKI Art Academy in Enschede, Netherlands and began her professonial  career at the Dutch Government Publishing and Printing Office in the Hague where she designed catalogs and postage stamps.  Since opening her own practice in 1991 she has gained a global reputation for experimentation in book design, earning numerous honors and in 2001 becoming the youngest recipient of the Gutenberg Prize, an award recognizing outstanding services to the advancement of the book arts.  Boom's work can be found in the permanent collections of museums around the world including the Letterform Archive which holds over 40 of her books.
