3D Model of West Portal Area on Display

1/22/19 - 4/28/2019

West Portal

West Portal General Floor Area

190 Lenox Way

The Works Progress Administration of the New Deal made a model of San Francisco in 1938. The West Portal Library, also built by the WPA 80 years ago, is displaying part of the model representing nearby areas as a participant in Take Part. In this city-wide exhibit, each branch, including the Main Library, is displaying a piece of the model and planning accompanying events.

On February 23 from 2:00-3:30 there will be an opportunity to gather around the model with some invited experts to commune over what it tells us and what questions it arouses. The next day a Make a Zine program for kids will happen at 2:00 and at 3:30 Harvey Smith, a scholar of the New Deal, will help us understand the New Deal and to imagine what a New New Deal might look like. Can San Francisco be more public-minded?

Also plan to come to our Open House to celebrate our 80th birthday on May 4!
