Strike! Ethnic Studies Now

3/23/19 - 6/20/2019

Main Library

General Collections Exhibit Space - 3rd Floor

100 Larkin St.

After a months-long student-led strike fifty years ago, the country's first College of Ethnic Studies opened at San Francisco State University. The Black Student Union and a coalition of student groups called the Third World Liberation Front led the movement for culturally relevant education and hiring of more faculty of color. Their protest galvanized the local community and made national news.

Since then, colleges and universities across the country have opened Ethnic Studies Departments and California is currently developing a model curriculum for high school. This exhibit explores the events leading up to the strike, the campus strike and the need and enduring legacy of Ethnic Studies.
