We discuss José Rizal’s Noli Me Tángere (Touch Me Not), a seminal work of Philippine literature. The novel depicts life under Spanish colonial rule and helped awaken Filipino national identity and roused resistance to Spain’s nearly 400-year rule over the Philippines.
José Rizal is regarded as the national hero of the Philippines.
This book club will meet over the coming months as a multi-part exploration of Noli Me Tángere, inviting readers to engage deeply with the novel through sustained, thoughtful discussion. By returning to the text over multiple sessions, participants can develop richer conversations and a more layered understanding of the work.
Discussions may examine character, narrative structure, historical and cultural context, major themes and the novel’s contemporary relevance. Designed for readers who value reflection and collaborative insight, this book club highlights how a single text can continue to reveal new meanings over time. This session will focus on Chapters 1–21.
