If you enjoy some history in your fiction, spend an hour hashing out the details of—and the history behind—this month’s selection: Esi Edugyan's Washington Black. When an eccentric white man called Titch chooses eleven year-old Washington Black, enslaved on Titch's brother's Barbados plantation, to be his manservant, neither can foresee the geographic and emotional distances the two will travel together.
