Alfonso, a 60 or 70 year old peasant, returns home after a 17 year absence to care for his sick adult son and face the family he left behind. This non-melodramatic story of catastrophic hardship, set in rural Colombia during sugarcane harvest when crop burning fills the air with a blue-gray ash (reminiscent of contemporary wildfire haze), touches upon issues of labor and health rights with stark, eerie images. Directed by César Augusto Acevedo who won the Cannes Caméra d’Or for best first film. Rotten Tomatoes rating of 94%.

"A poetic and devastating statement on how environmental issues impact every aspect of life... not to be missed" — Film at Lincoln Center
