We discuss SFPL’s On the Same Page selection for Nov./Dec., Hold You Down by Tracy Brown.

Hold You Down, by Tracy Brown revolves around the complex lives of two African American sisters and their sons as they navigate through the challenges of family, friendship, love and personal growth in New York in the 1990’s and early 2000’s.

Mercy and Lenox Howard's unbreakable bond has been their constant solace. Navigating the challenging streets of Harlem, where their mother was often absent, forged a deep reliance on each other. Now, as young and intelligent mothers, they are resolute in their quest to thrive in the bustling city. All the while, they're nurturing their two sons, Deon and Judah, whose futures shine brightly before them.

When on a journey she deems promising and influential, Lenox alters not only her own life but also the trajectory of her family indefinitely. The consequences of her decisions ripple through, leading cousins Deon and Judah into unfamiliar territory.

Brown’s novel paints a vivid picture of the challenges faced by young people in inner-city environments, while offering a compelling exploration of relationships, self-discovery, and the strength that can arise from genuine connections between family in overwhelming adversity.

Tracy Brown passed away on May 20, 2023, her death was announced by her children Ashley, Quaviel and Justin through a Facebook post on Tracy's official FB page. Her books, which are set in New York and focus on women who triumph despite adversity, have been Essence Magazine and USA Today bestsellers.
