Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema moves indoors to present “Face-to-Face with the Filmmaker”— its winter series of intimate screenings featuring local independent film followed by an informal conversation and Q&A with the filmmaker. In May, the series features a special screening of Las Muralistas: Our Walls, Our Stories, a 30-minute documentary directed by Javier Briones in partnership with SFMOMA. The film features women muralists whose works cover the walls of San Francisco’s Mission District. The muralism movement that emerged in the 1970s has roots in Bernal Heights and the Mission and marked the beginning of a tradition of activism, expression, and community building through public art. Filmmakers and guests are invited to share their rich experience of documenting the femmes of Las Mujeres Muralistas and Precita Eyes and the on-going effort to make space for future muralistas.

Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema stages free film screenings in neighborhood parks, playgrounds and public spaces to increase the exposure and recognition of local artists and to heighten appreciation by neighborhood and citywide residents while building community.

Space limited. Please sign up at Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema.
