Film screening followed by panel discussion with guest speakers about the literacy crisis nationally and locally.

Literacy is the key to unlock knowledge.  In 2023, the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), showed that not even half (43%) of fourth graders in the U.S. scored at or above a proficient level in reading. The film, The Right to Read, directed by Jennie Mackenzie and produced by Roco Films explores this issue which can have long term negative implications for children struggling in school and can carry throughout their adult lives.

The Right to Read film shares the stories of an NAACP activist, a teacher, and two American families who fight to provide our youngest generation with the most foundational indicator of life-long success: the ability to read.
