Shanta Nimbark Sacharoff, Author of Flavors of India: A vegetarian Indian Cuisine and Cooking Together: a Vegetarian Co-op Cookbook will read a passage from her most recent book to discuss the importance of cooking with family and friends to enrich our sense of community followed by a cooking demonstration of two types of Refrigerated Pickles.
Shanta will talk about the tradition of pickling food and the health benefits of eating pickled and fermented foods. Shanta will briefly discuss the importance of organic cucumbers and other vegetables used in pickling and give some tips for shopping and selecting these items. She will then do a demonstration on how to make refrigerator Pickles using two methods; one with raw vegetables such as cucumbers and the other using briefly cooked vegetables such as cauliflower.
During Q &A, Shanta will serve samples of already-made pickles with homemade chai and crackers. She will also hand out printed copies of the recipe for Refrigerated Pickles. In addition, for up to 24 attendees who have signed up, Shanta will give each one a jar of pickles to take home.
