If you enjoy some history in your fiction, spend an hour hashing out the details of—and the history behind—this month’s selection. Set in Mexico City in the 1970s, Velvet Was the Night follows an escapist-fiction-loving secretary and a violence-loathing enforcer whose paths run together as both try to discover what became of a beautiful art student who disappeared under suspicious circumstances.
