In this tale of doomed love, set in turn-of-the-century Vienna, a woman obsessively recounts repeated romantic encounters she has had over the years with a concert pianist, though the man has no memory of her. Based on a novella by Stefan Zweig, starring Joan Fontaine and Louis Jourdan, and stylishly directed by Max Ophüls. In 1992, it was inducted into the Library of Congress's National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
"Frame for frame one of the most gorgeous movies ever made... summons wellsprings of emotion with every pan, swoop, and dolly." — Film at Lincoln Center
