After getting out of prison, a small-time crook crosses paths with a woman resembling his long-lost lover. Heralded as a landmark of Sixth Generation Chinese cinema, director Lou Ye's Suzhou River is a film noir that blends elements of Vertigo (1958) with tragic romance.
