Presentation: Reading the News with "Print Princess" Kelsey Russell

Friday, 3/21/2025
11:00 - 12:00

“Print Princess” and media literacy influencer Kelsey Russell discusses her passion for information literacy and does what she does best—reads us the newspaper.

Kelsey joins librarians from the Magazines and Newspapers Center to celebrate Womxn’s History Month by reading aloud and annotating current news pieces by and about women. She discusses how she came to get passionate about the news, her tips for discerning and trusting news articles and what it’s like to be a social media influencer with one foot firmly planted in the analog world of print newspapers.

When Kelsey received a subscription to the print New York Times as a gift, she didn’t know taking to TikTok to read articles from the paper would turn her into a viral star. Now, she has launched a career as a media literacy influencer, can count over 100,000 followers on TikTok and routinely wracks up a million views on her most popular videos. This has led to co-hosting a news show for tweens called First Stop News and consulting with legacy news organizations who can learn something about making news sexy from the “media literate hottie.”
