Presentation: Telephone Consumer Protection Act and Avoiding Scams

with Consumer Action
Tuesday, 5/13/2025
6:30 - 7:30

Scammers are evolving, using AI-generated robocalls and deceptive messages to trick people. In this presentation, Linda Williams will teach you how scammers operate, how you can take practical steps for your protection and how the Telephone Consumer Protection Act protects consumer privacy.

Surveys reveal that 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. have experienced financial fraud or a scam in the past 12 months. The fraud often starts as an enticing text message or an unwanted voice or AI-generated robocall. The method varies, but the motive is the same—to trick you into parting with your cash or sensitive information. In today’s digital landscape, consumers have to navigate constant technological changes—think AI and data analytics, for example—and the new challenges they present for protecting personal, sensitive information. Moving into 2025, regulations like the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) will be pivotal in addressing concerns about information privacy, communications privacy, and personal privacy.
