With San Francisco Environment as your guide, learn the basics of container gardening and explore how compost builds healthy soil and supports pollinator-friendly plants. Discover San Francisco's unique composting system, where food scraps placed in residents' green bins are transformed into nutrient-rich compost available free to San Francisco residents. San Francisco Environment works to advance climate action, waste reduction, resource conservation, and a healthier environment for all. The department provides programs, resources, and information to help San Franciscans reduce waste, repair and reuse items, and support a more circular economy.
