In this six-week series, journey through a world of stories as we examine the art found in books. Each week will feature a different book, where young artists will discover how authors use words to spark imagination and illustrators bring the words to life through image. We'll build connections through the art making process, strengthening our artistic vocabulary, creative thinking and observation skills.

For children ages 6 and older. Seats available first come, first served.

Schedule:

November 5 - Seeing Like an Artist

Discover how artists can turn unexpected marks and mistakes into creative possibilities. Young artists will practice looking closely, using their imaginations, and transforming simple shapes, marks, and “oops” moments into something new.

November 12 - Lines That Tell Stories

Explore how different types of lines can communicate movement, emotion, and personality. Young artists will experiment with expressive lines and use them to draw their own imaginative characters and creatures.

November 19 - Discovering Texture

Take an imaginary walk on the beach as we look for shells. Young artists will create observational drawings of sea shells with colored pencils learning how to build up texture.

December 3 - Growing with Collage

Explore how artists can use simple shapes, colors, and layers of paper to create vibrant worlds. Inspired by Lois Ehlert’s colorful collage illustrations, young artists will cut, tear, arrange, and layer materials to create their own vibrant garden.

December 10 - Cityscapes and Drawing Big

Discover how art can transform the places where we live and bring people together. Young artists will work large-scale drawing to create cityscapes incorporating details with murals, using shapes, line, and texture to tell the stories of their communities.

December 17 - Imaging Your Own World

Explore the imaginative world of artist and illustrator Mary Blair and discover how she used bold colors, shapes, and imaginative perspectives to create memorable worlds. Young artists will experiment with scale, color, and composition to create their own small worlds made from geometric shapes.
