October is American Archives Month!
Join the California Historical Society, Society of California Pioneers, San Francisco History Center, California State Library's Sutro Library, UCSF Archives & Special Collections, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Library & Archives, Environmental Design Archives at UC Berkeley, and The National Archives at San Francisco for San Francisco’s second Archives Crawl. The theme for the Crawl is Im(migration) & Indigenous Voices of California in connection with San Francisco's One City One Book read The Best We Could Do by Thi Bui.
San Francisco’s Archives Crawl is designed to celebrate archives in the city and encourages guests to explore and engage with institutions that collect archival material. Visit institutions you may not have visited before, pose questions, learn more about what an archive is and what archivists do. More details and information on each institution shared on the San Francisco Archives Crawl blog.
Pick your own starting point at one of these three institutions and have the personal goal of visiting all three locations:
- California Historical Society -- 678 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA 94105
- San Francisco Public Library, History Center -- 100 Larkin Street, 6th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94102
- Society of California Pioneers (in the Presidio) -- 101 Montgomery St. Suite 150 SF 94129
When you visit California Historical Society, you’ll also meet archivists and see archives from:
- Environmental Design Archives, UC Berkeley
- National Archives at San Francisco
- SFMOMA Library & Archives
When you visit San Francisco Public Library, you’ll also meet archivists and see archives from:

- Each institution may have tips on how to handle or view the materials. Remember to listen closely to the archivists and staff on hand.
- Ask questions, listen to stories, and have fun!
- RSVP and invite your friends on Facebook.
Learn more about History and Genealogy through the wealth of resources available at the Library.
