Synopsis

The soundtrack alone makes this accomplished, well-crafted debut worth a look-see, running the gamut from the retro fabulosity of artists like Sister Sledge and Marvin Gaye to the au courant musical stylings of chanteuse du jour Aimee Mann and the Billie Holiday/Nina Simone-influenced Macy Gray. Fortunately, that's not all this sweet movie has to offer. It's an all too rare film about the lives and loves, ups and downs, and enduring friendships of a group of predominantly African-American gay men in L.A. Without coming off like a remedial primer on black queer life or devolving into overweening sentiment or cliché, it captures the authentic flavor of black gay urban life with refreshingly subtle, precise attention to detail. Hopelessly romantic Marcus (Seth Gilliam), a successful photographer, struggles with his inability to acclimate to the mores of contemporary urban gay life. His neighbor and love interest, Darby (Rockmond Dunbar), tries to balance his own happiness with that of his girlfriend (Vanessa Williams). HIV-positive Hill (Dwight Ewell), copes with his romantic travails after catching his European boyfriend Gilbert (Rudolf Martin) locking lips with someone else. Dante (Renoly Santiago), a Latino boy-toy from Beverly Hills, revels in youth while trying to deny his privileged upbringing. And Cris (Jazzmun), an imperious transgender diva, is blithely ignorant of how her lead singer affectations are disrupting the harmony of her singing ensemble. Throw in a trio of veritable hunks put to good use as eye-candy and supporting roles and cameos by Loretta Devine (WAITING TO EXHALE), Thea Vidale (THEA), and Devon O'Dessa (MY SO-CALLED LIFE), and you've got a very entertaining stew of black gay experience. Don't wait for others to tell you how much fun PUNKS is — be sure to see it for yourself.
