Description

How can a film about a hetero marriage that ends in a heart-warming male-female kiss also be one of the funniest gay films of the year? Lane Janger pulls it off in this hilarious and sexy directorial debut. Amy, a lawyer, and Anthony, a fireman, are about to be married. Even though he is completely in love with his bride-to-be, Anthony has a fantasy of a three-way with Amy and another woman. Convinced that he should fulfill his dream before the wedding, Anthony presents the idea to Amy who is disgusted and infuriated at the very thought. Thinking she'll put the whole thing to rest, Amy gives in, but only if her horny fiancé will agree to a three-way with her and another guy. To Amy's surprise he agrees, so Anthony sets out to find another guy and Amy another girl. Enlisting the help of his buddies at the firehouse, Anthony and his pals end up exploring gay New York, and trying to keep her end of the bargain, Amy befriends the lesbian furniture maker across the street. With its refreshingly balanced male-female perspective, JUST ONE TIME is a heartfelt and hilarious plea for love, understanding, and tolerance.

Synopsis

Gray documents on video all the troubles with his partner, Daniel, prior to their commitment ceremony.

Description

The Joys Of Smoking is a gritty, cinema verité-style trip into the lives and relationships of seven San Franciscans. Presented as Gray’s Graduate Thesis Film on unhealthy relationships, The Joys Of Smoking focuses on Gray and his lover, Daniel, a young gay couple just a week away from a commitment ceremony – and certainly seems to prove Gray's thesis that love doesn't always make everything better, and sometimes even makes it much worse. Gray looks closely at the pattern of Daniel’s cheating, and sees how it mirrors Daniel’s father’s actions over the years – a point that is literally "brought home" when Daniel’s mother shows up to stay with them after catching her husband cheating once again. Gray then records the psychotic ending of his friend's lesbian relationship, and casts his lens on a “happy” couple who have moved in together after 24 hours, and are living off of one of the men’s parents in a gorgeous rent-free San Francisco apartment. True to its title, the predominant image in this film is the cigarette – Gray and his friends are always smoking, talking about smoking or craving a cigarette. What Gray finally reveals is that he and his friends are rarely perfect. However, it is their imperfections that allow us to feel close to these characters and see their humanity.
