Synopsis

A deft combination of narrative and experimental filmmaking, Jack Walsh’s The Second Coming is the coming of age story of Carlos, a bi-racial gay teen who becomes a politically aware activist. Set in the near future during a Fundamentalist group’s attempted coup d’état in the United States, this conspiracy-theory-wrought film examines overriding social crises such as homophobia and racism. Carlos, alienated from most of his peers and family, finds love and companionship with a classmate, Ben. Together the two join forces with a group of teens who are making and broadcasting videotapes that question the crisis created by the Fundamentalist threat. Through a series of betrayals and a death squad-like kidnapping, Carlos is murdered. However, in the face of these devastating circumstances, a new voice of resistance appears that gives hope to those whom Carlos has left behind. The Second Coming shows how individuals swept up in a chain of historical events can resist and have an impact on a seemingly hopeless situation.
