Description

In the 1990s, photographer and performance artist William Yang presented a slide-show that traced the journeys of several of his Sydney friends with AIDS, as well as exploring his Chinese heritage. Now captured on film by Tony Ayres (China Dolls), Sadness supplements the simplicity of the original format of witnessing more than twenty years of his gay friends’ lives by following Yang to his birthplace in Far North Queensland and providing reenactments of various versions of the mysterious 1920 murder of an uncle by marriage. Yang’s direct, low-key delivery effectively establishes an eloquently contemplative tone until "the two strands of my story – the gay and the Chinese side – had come together over the common experience of grief." The result is a moving document, poignant and uplifting, a beautifully healing gift.
