Writer and TED speaker Chris Ategeka and former Microsoft executive Scott Mauvais discuss how rapid change in technology is affecting society, the positive and negative impacts and what we can do to harness the benefits and mitigate the unintended consequences of technology.

As technology reshapes society it has made our lives easier, healthier, more efficient and more convenient. Yet these benefits often come with unintended—or willfully ignored—consequences ranging from biases and increased income inequality to undermining the key foundations of democracy. 

After the talk, Ategeka will sign copies of his new book The Unintended Consequences of Technology: Solutions, Breakthroughs, and the Restart We Need.

Chris Ategeka is the founder and CEO at UCOT Inc., a company that has created a unique model to support and fund early-stage startups creating solutions to unintended and willfully ignored consequences of technology. Ategaka is also the founder of Hourglass ventures, a fund that supports visionary entrepreneurs from the African continent who come from underprivileged backgrounds, and Health Access Corps, a social enterprise that works to establish sustainable health care systems on the African continent.

Scott Mauvais was previously the director of AI and Global Partnerships for Microsoft Philanthropies and Microsoft Cities, where he worked with city leaders to apply the global resources and expertise of Microsoft to foster the civic tech ecosystem and create opportunities for economic growth. Mauvais serves on the national boards of Upwardly Global and the Urban Age Institute and co-owns of The WELL.
