Free Comic Book Day on May the 4th Be With You

SAN FRANCISCO, April 24, 2024 - San Francisco Public Library (SFPL) partners with Comix Experience to celebrate Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 4, 2024, also known as Star Wars Day. This event, which takes place annually on the first Saturday in May, brings together the comic book industry and libraries to give away free comic books and graphic novels, promoting the joy of reading for all ages.

Comic books have long been recognized as a powerful tool to engage reluctant readers and foster a love for literature. With their captivating stories and vibrant visuals, comic books have the ability to turn young readers into lifelong readers.  According to Dolly Goyal, Chief of Public Programs at San Francisco Public Library, "Graphic novels are proven to inspire young readers because of their visual storytelling, which helps them gain confidence because it's easier for them to finish the stories. I personally am a huge comic book fan, so I am particularly excited that San Francisco Public Library will distribute free comic books and graphic novels to youth at all library locations during our regular open hours.”

In addition to the physical copies available at the Library, SFPL also offers a wide range of digital comic books through free e-resources. By using their library card, comic book enthusiasts can access popular titles such as Big Nate, Batman, Star Wars and more. The online graphic novel collection can be accessed through several resources including Black and Brown Comix Arts Festival, Boundless, Hoopla and Libby/Overdrive. SFPL proudly offers comic books for all ages from esteemed publishers including Marvel, D.C. and Dark Horse Comics.

SFPL also encourages the public to support local comic bookstores. By visiting freecomicbookday.com, individuals can locate participating shops near them and contribute to the thriving comic book community.

Join SFPL and Comix Experience for Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 4th to celebrate the magic of comic books and inspire a new generation of readers. For more information and to access SFPL's online comic book collection, please visit sfpl.org.
