San Francisco Public Library Celebrates Richard Beal, "Tenderloin's Ambassador for Recovery," and His Debut Book, Recovering from the Game

San Francisco Public Library (SFPL) invites you to celebrate the publication of local author Richard Beal’s first book, Recovering from the Game, on January 10 at the Main Library. Beal, known in the recovery community as the “Tenderloin’s Ambassador for Recovery,” shares the challenges of eight local people who transitioned from drug use and life on the streets to recovery. Each true story is set in the familiar streets, parks and community organizations of San Francisco’s Tenderloin district.

Recovering from the Game is a rallying cry for all of us in San Francisco, as it illuminates the need for community support and resources during our current opioid epidemic,” says Rachel Kinnon, SFPL’s Jail and Reentry Services manager. “Richard and the people who share their stories in this book are models of hope for people in addiction and for their loved ones.”

At the launch celebration, Beal will speak alongside several people featured in his book. He will also discuss his own experiences in the streets of the Tenderloin, his recovery and his experience writing the book with his peers. For more details, visit SFPL’s website
