Youth Engaged in Library Leadership (YELL)

YELL: Youth Engaged in Library Leadership

Welcome to YELL, the summer leadership program for teens at San Francisco Public Library.

"I would recommend YELL to a friend because it gave me the opportunity to learn about a wide range of topics ranging from financial literacy and time management to graphic design and social media management. I was able to combine my interest in Science and Art to complete a project that would allow me to help others in my community. It was overall a really fun experience; I got to know a lot more about SFPL and also about other teens in my community." YELL 2020 teen
"I would definitely recommend YELL to a friend because I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here at YELL and learned various life skills while attending the workshops. I also made so many new friends and became more comfortable with talking in front of large groups of people." —YELL 2020 teen

What is YELL?
Youth Engaged in Library Leadership (YELL) is a workforce development program designed for older teens, requiring a weekly commitment over the summer to work collaboratively with their local Librarians, assist with STEM content creation and develop project-based youth led events.

What are the requirements for being selected for YELL?
YELL interns are required to attend weekly meetings, orientation and trainings that support content creation and development, execution and evaluation of a team project. Time commitment is 15-20 hours each week. You should be enthusiastic about learning about the Library, supporting the Library’s  Mission Statement and working with youth to make your community and Library better for teens.

What are the dates of YELL?
Bi-weekly meetings will take place between June and August. It is required that you are present for all (or almost all) of the meetings.

Is this a paid internship?
Yes, interns will receive a stipend every two weeks. Every participant who completes the requirements for YELL will also be awarded a $500 scholarship deposited into their K2C or ScholarShare529 account in the fall after the internship is completed.

How does a teen apply for YELL?

We are proud to partner with JCYC and SF YouthWorks to coordinate application submissions. You must be entering grades 11 or 12 in Fall 2021 or a 2021 graduating senior; be a resident of San Francisco; and attend high school in San Francisco.

Applications are now open.  In order to be considered for YELL, be sure to:

  • Select San Francisco Youthworks (SFYW) for Program
  • In Motivational Questions (on the third page), under Question 3 "Name one city department that you would like to know more about and why," include Public Library – Youth Engaged in Library Leadership (YELL) with your longer answer.
