35 Shots of Rum (2008), directed by Claire Denis, is a quiet, intimate drama about the close bond between Lionel, a widowed Paris Métro driver, and his adult daughter Joséphine, who live together in a small apartment in Paris. The film observes their daily routines and relationships as Joséphine begins to contemplate independence and romantic connection, forcing both to confront the inevitability of change and separation. Rather than conventional narrative, Denis uses mood, gesture, and silence to explore themes of love, family, cultural identity, and letting go, creating a tender character portrait both personal and universal. Featuring an evocative score by the music group Tindersticks. Pre and post analysis and discussion with Maya Sidhu.

Maya Sidhu is a Lecturer in French at U.C. Berkeley where she teaches courses on French as a second language and Francophone cinema.
