Presentation: Wood Engraving Demonstration

Thursday, 4/16/2026
6:00 - 7:15

A demonstration of the beautiful, detailed art of wood engraving with artist Colleen Dwire will be followed by a brief Q&A. Wood engraving is a relief printmaking technique that involves using various engraving tools to make fine detailed lines into an end-grain, type-high wood block. The block is then inked, usually on a press and prints are made. Although the hey day of this art form was the mid-19th century before photography became firmly established for publication use, there are still artisans keeping it alive today. Come see how this extraordinary form of image-making in wood is practiced.

Presented as part of the Wood Engravers' Network 5th Triennial Exhibition, on view 27 March - 17 May 2026 at the Main Library, 4th Floor, in the Art, Music & Recreation Center Exhibit Space. The exhibition's Opening Reception takes place on Thursday, Apr. 2nd, 6 - 7:45 PM.

Colleen Dwire's interest in printmaking began while researching the history of book illustration for a bachelor's degree thesis. This led to study and employment in pre-digital commercial printing. Since then she has worked on fine letterpress printing projects with hand-set type and wood engravings, a challenging process and a welcome contrast to sitting at a computer. Our world can use frequent doses of truth and humor, and Colleen aims to offer both while evolving her skills in traditional and digital illustration media. She welcomes opportunities for children's book and magazine illustration, book design and production, graphic design, wood engraving commissions, letterpress printing and workshops. Colleen is a member of the Wood Engravers' Network (USA) and an elected member of the Society of Wood Engravers (UK) and serves as a board member of North Bay Letterpress Arts in Sebastopol.
