Join us for a commemoration of the third day of Kwanzaa as we celebrate Ujima, collective work and responsibility, with the Village Project and saxophonist Ashley Jeminson.

Our program begins with pouring of libations and a Kwanzaa message and before our feature musical performance of Together We Rise, a 30-minute live saxophone experience celebrating connection, community, and the collective spirit of Ujima. Through a vibrant blend of jazz, soul, R&B, and uplifting contemporary selections, saxophonist Ashley Jemison invites audiences of all ages to experience music as a shared language—one that brings people together, honors those who came before us, and celebrates what we can create together.

Following the performance, participants are welcome to partake in a feast prepared by Nia Soul Food.

Founded in 2006 by Adrian Williams, The Village Project is a San Francisco–based nonprofit dedicated to supporting children, families, and communities through culturally grounded programming, educational enrichment, and neighborhood‑building events. From after‑school programs to citywide cultural celebrations, The Village Project remains committed to strengthening community ties and preserving the cultural vibrancy of the Fillmore. For years, she has coordinated a city-wide celebration of Kwanzaa by connecting traditionally African American communities.

Ashley Jemison is a Bay Area saxophonist, recording artist, composer, and performer with more than 20 years of musical experience. A graduate of California State University, Los Angeles with a B.A. in Music, Ashley blends influences from jazz, R&B, soul, gospel, and contemporary music to create performances that are expressive, soulful, and engaging. A recipient of the San Jose Jazz New Works Grant, Ashley continues to develop and perform original music alongside an active career performing throughout Northern California. She has shared the stage with acclaimed artists including contemporary jazz bassist Julian Vaughn and Grammy Award-winning pianist Tammy L. Hall. From concert stages and festivals to corporate events and community celebrations, Ashley approaches each performance with a desire to create connection, celebrate culture, and bring people together through music.
