Project Read Tutors:
- Complete approximately 6 hours of online training
- Meet one-on-one with learner for 1–2 hours each week
- Commit to tutoring for approximately one year
- Meet in public locations, with SFPL locations encouraged
- Track volunteer hours and learner progress
- Work collaboratively with Project Read staff
- Approach tutoring with patience, flexibility, and respect
- Must be at least 19 years old
Who Makes a Great Project Read Volunteer Tutor?
You do not need teaching experience. Training and ongoing support are provided.
Successful tutors are:
- Patient
- Reliable
- Good listeners
- Comfortable working with adults from diverse backgrounds
- Willing to learn
- Open to learner-centered approaches
Progress Takes Time
Project Read uses a learner-centered, trauma-informed approach. Many adult learners have experienced barriers such as interrupted schooling, learning differences, poverty, incarceration, recovery, or other life challenges. There is no single timeline for literacy development. Progress may be gradual, and small gains can represent significant accomplishments.

Project Read generally needs tutors who can meet with adult learners during weekday daytimes at the Main Library. If you have only evening and/or weekend availability, or prefer to work at a branch library or virtually, we invite you to look at other library volunteer opportunities:
- ESL Tutoring (with adults)
- FOG Readers (with children)
