Tech’d Out

San Francisco Public Library has incorporated additional product options into its popular laptop and mobile wireless internet hotspot (mifi) device lending program, Tech’d Out.
In its first year, Tech’d Out saw great demand for the program that allows SFPL patrons to check out laptop/mifi bundles for use outside the library so that users can connect with the internet on their terms.

What’s new?

Stand-alone mifi devices have been added to the already circulating Chromebook/mifi bundles.
These neatly packaged devices allow patrons to connect up to 20 wireless devices to Verizon’s 4G LTE wireless data network.

Where can I get one?

SFPL patrons who want wireless data on-the-go can get it at:

Chromebook/mifi bundles are on offer for checkout and return* at the following SFPL locations:

*Note: Bundles MUST be returned to the original loaning location. Check the library’s catalog or contact the library for availability

What’s in the mifi box?

Each mifi device comes conveniently packaged in a sturdy protective case, along with a charging block and power cord.

What’s in the Chromebook bundle?

Bundles circulate in a handy Tech’d Out bag.

  • Chromebook
  • Verizon wireless internet hotspot device with unlimited data in protective clamshell case
  • Chromebook power cord
  • Mifi power cord
  • Lending agreement/bundle contents invoice sheet

How does it work?

SFPL patrons who have library cards with borrowing privileges in good standing can borrow mifis or Chromebook/mifi bundles for up to three (3) weeks – just like borrowing a book or a DVD!

Patrons with Welcome or Digital Access cards are not able to borrow mifis or laptop bundles.

Patrons must read and sign the library’s Chromebook & MiFi Bundle Use Agreement.

Mifis and Chromebook bundles are not renewable. At this time, patrons are not able to request them through the library catalog.

Devices and bundles are available on a first-come, first-served basis at lending locations.

Devices and bundles MUST be returned to a staff person at the original lending location during library open hours. These items should NOT be placed in book drops or into the return machine at the Main Library.
