
The Main Library is the resource center for the entire San Francisco Public Library system and the libraries of Northern California. Its large collection and extensive programs and exhibits support the Library's mission of "access to information, knowledge, independent learning and the joy of reading."

Unique research collections include those in the San Francisco History Center, Book Arts and Special Collections, the LGBTQIA Center and San Francisco Government (in the Government Information Center)

Tours of the Main Library
Tours are conducted on the first Tuesday of each month at 12 p.m. Meet at the Information Desk in the First Floor atrium. Tours are limited to 15 people on a first come, first served basis. Groups can schedule a private tour by calling (415) 557-4266.
